ABOUT

Cantor David Mintz is the Director of the Center for Prayer and Spirituality at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City. In that capacity, he oversees the vision of religious life for the progressive, 1800-family congregation, implementing the community's multi-dimensional prayer practice, transformative spiritual initiatives, immersive experiences, and eclectic musical programming. Trained in the Institute for Jewish Spirituality's Clergy Leadership Program, he also leads B'nai Jeshurun's mindfulness services on Shabbat and High Holy Days.

Cantor Mintz previously served Touro Synagogue in New Orleans, where, in addition to serving as a thought leader around prayer, music, and lifelong learning, he oversaw Touro's long-standing tradition of Jazz Fest Shabbat, collaborating with renowned jazz musicians, such as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Jon Cleary, Sunpie Barnes and the Panorama Jazz Band of New Orleans.

Cantor Mintz was ordained from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in 2014. As a student, he was the recipient of a cantorial fellowship in the Tisch Leadership program, a fellowship that fosters transformational leaders in the Reform movement. While studying at HUC-JIR, he held cantorial internships at Central Synagogue in Manhattan and Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Boston University and Manhattan School of Music, respectively.

As an educator, Cantor Mintz has served as a guest lecturer at the University of Louisiana and Limmud New Orleans, and has taught at BIMA at Brandeis University and URJ Mitzvah Corps in San Francisco, CA. He was a summer chaplaincy intern at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and in 2013, was the recipient of a Fischl-Kohn Memorial Grant to travel to Prague with the Defiant Requiem Foundation to research his cantorial thesis on the music of Theresienstadt.
