VOICES OF SPIRITUAL RESISTANCE IN TEREZIN
Between 1941 and 1945, approximately 140,000 Jews passed through the gates of TerezÃn, including some of Eastern Europe’s most prominent Jewish musicians. Even prior to the Nazis officially condoning cultural activities in the ghetto, these Jews began to create a musical life for themselves. They met in basements to sing Czech folk songs, listened to chamber music in attics, and eventually, created of cultural life full of choirs, cabaret, orchestras, operas, and even a jazz band called the Ghetto Swingers.

Voices of Spiritual Resistance in Terezin is a narrated musical program that uncovers the haunting beauty of this music and explores how it served as a mechanism for survival through expressions of comfort, connection, satire, and defiance. This program has been performed in communities across the United States and offers a truly unique way of exploring Yom Hashoah, Kristallnacht, as well as elevating other times of the year.
